Claudia Final Images

Claudia Final Images

I am happy with the outcome of Claudia as it came out as I had planned it to. I am pleased with the application of the foundation blush and the contour as it really brings out the cheekbones. I am also pleased with the eye make up, as I wanted it to be natural but still wanted the lash line to be thick with eyeliner.
I struggled with the hair as when i practised on a doll the hair was longer so I was challenged on the day when the model had shorter hair however with improvisation the outcome was not to bad. This taught me that I need to practise on shorter hair.
To improve I would carry our a better research of the 1950's as the image is not accurate to 1950's.

Creating dark eyes and dark lips

Creating dark eyes and dark lip

After a consultation with the mode i found out that that she has dry skin therefore after cleansing and toning I used a rich moisturiser on her followed

Final Mood Board for Claudia

Final Mood Board for Claudia

After creating a moodpboard for Claudia It made it clear what make up hair style and clothing I was going for. I wanted it to be very glamorous 1950's make up with the classic winged liner and the famous Marilyn Monroe curls. Although in the 1950's they would not have worn a lot of glitter for the clothing, in American Horror Story I have spotted some of the characters wearing glittery outfits to perform therefore I decided to go with a glitter top.  I purchased a glittery top, glamorous eyelashes and a big necklace to show of Claudia as a beautiful desirable woman with a lot of trouble which she hides behind her beauty.

Quentin Final Images

Quentin Final Images

The mood board helped me a lot with what i was aiming to design and create for Quentins character as I found it harder to design for a male. I like the burgundy jumper because it shows darkness and danger. The bruise underneath the eye is to show the abusive relationship between Claudia and Quentin and the cigarette in the mouth is to show his status and that he is a person that chain smokes.
Overall I struggled with Quentin however I am pleased with how the photos turned out because they are dark and gloomy as I wanted to them to be which fits in well with American Horror Story Freak show and also how Claudia imagined him.

Developing Quentin

Developing Quentin

Quentin is Claudias imaginary boyfriend. He in Claudias eyes is the most perfect man alive, she is obsessed and in love with him.
Quentin also loves Claudia but he also loves the freak show, he spends most of his time preparing for the show and helping with the acts that he forgets to spend time with Claudia which leaves her angry and upset. Claudia idolises Elsa Mars and in the same way she has created her imaginary boyfriend to be very handsome and strong.

Given Circumstances for Quentin

24 years of age, Quentin has always worked as a builder but he has always had a passion for the circus watching extraordinary acts which is why he now works in the circus as full time as well as being Claudia's boyfriend. Their relationship gets very abusive as Claudia has mental problems which leads her to have psych attacks throwing things at Quentin and hitting him which results in fights from both ends.

Quentin Mood board

I like the colour deep red as it shows power but at the same time danger and blood which is why I incorporated it in my moodpboard so i get more ideas of how to use it in my final design which I then decided to pair up with a red jumper. I wanted to show bruising to signify their abusive relationship. The contour on the face to show a handsome boy who Claudia is in love with.

Face Chart for Claudia

Face Chart for Claudia

1950 was the decade after world war 2, there is a shortage of men due to loses fro war and women tried everything to get a husband such as make up which helped them to look and feel better.
Make up during this time was so important that everyone wore it, 1950s make up was very elegant and strong and it is the classic red lip that is still popular today.
Eyeshadows came in variety of colours such as grey brown gold blue green purpule ad pink eyeshadows were applied minimal and usually one colour at a time they applied it to the lid and carried it to the outer v to elongate the eyes. Matte and shimmery colours were extremely popular. even though make up was popular it was still made to look natural. Black eyeliner with a flick was also very popular as it created and almond shape to the eye and elongated it even more, black brown grey blue green purple eyeliners were available.
At the start of the decade eyebrows were dark and strong but still natural looking but in 1952 the eyebrows became softer with a stronger arch.
The lash line was also tighlined to make the lash line look thicker. Mascara was very popular and was applied only on the upper lashes as they wanted the eyes to be larger and brighter.. A great foundation base was a must have, it came in liquid and cream and powder. Everyone desired a flawless complexion and was applied very heavily. Blush was used very naturaly and was never a bright red or pink colour. In the 1950s they drew outside of the normal lipline to make lips look fuller. Lips were the strongest element of the 1950’s and there were a variety of different red shapes like true reds to dark and orange reds.

Look 1

In 1952 there was a rise in different coloured eyeshadows therefore I wanted to play around with different colours creating a fun look that could be worn in the Freak Show.

Research on Fashion and Make Up in 1952

Research on Fashion and Make Up in 1952

As American Horror Story Freak show is set in Florida in 1952 I did research to find out about the fashion and make up then as my version of Claudia thinks she is a part of the tv series, therefore her make up and clothes will have to match the time and place it was set in the series.

As Claudia is a woman in her twenties now obsessed with TV series, she thinks that she is in the Tv show American Horror Story Freak show which is set in 1952. The reason why she feels a part of it is because she has been bullied since a child and called bad names which makes her feel as if she is part of the 'freaks' as they accept her the way she is. However being accepted is still not enough for Claudia she wants to be like her idol Elsa Mars in the show.

I started looking at the way Elsa dresses and also the way she does her her and I also researched fashion and make up in the 1952 to inspire for a design for Claudia. Claudia is a  tomboy she does not like the actual make up but she loves the confidence that it gives her although it isn't always as she is overshadowed by Elsa Mars every time.

Fashion in 1952

Fashion in 1952 reflected peoples economic situation and status, therefore it played a very important part hence why fashion in the American Horror Story was taken very seriously to show class status, Elsa always worse expensive clothes so people think that she is higher classed even though she wasn't and other characters that were working class wore normal clothes and had no make up or done up hair. The desire of every American woman regardless of their age, to achieve more changes in her wardrobe looking fashionable with sweaters, blouses, and skirts.

"The full skirt remained popular with young girls, but they also welcomed the "siren sheath" for both day and evening wear. This was not the shapeless bag of the 1920s; it outlined the figure closely from bosom to hipline. The waistline area was often indented with a wide cummerbund, satin sash or elastic belt or gored in to a princess line without a belt. The nipped waistline in suits and the tiny cinched waist in dresses relaxed and deepened into the long curve of the hourglass torso.1952 girdle.
Skirt shapes kept to a smooth molded hipline but often flared out below in pleats, "morning glory" gores or trumpet flounces. There were many all-over pleated dresses and by new processes the pleating was rendered permanent, crease-resistant and often washable. Hemlines were on the downward trend, dropping about one inch a season." Make up in 1952
Similar to fashion and clothes beauty played and important part in women lives as they took inspiration from movie stars of the decade in 1952 especially with the expansion of colour of TV which allowed the women to see a better application of the make up and the colours making make up more popular.  The buzz was a bright red lip with a bright brush and a flawless pale skin. The famous red lip was worn in the day time and night time as it was the fashion trend at the time. Cosmetic brands were discovered as it expanded and gave housewives more of a choice.

Overall from my research I found out the make up which was popular in 1952 which was the bold red lip, fair flawless complexion and thin arched brow. This was very useful because it gave me ideas of what I will incorporate in my designs for Claudia. Although American Horror Story gave me a clear idea of make up in the 1952 it still had a spin on it with the bright blue/green eyeshadows which the characters wore.

Experimenting American Horror Story

Experimenting American Horror Story

To get a better view of how I want my design of Claudia and Quentin to be, I decided to experiment a few looks and see what I am most comfortable with.

For the first look i created Tate from the first season of Ameican Horror Story. This was to explore them more obvious gothic sides that I could use in my design.
I had never done anything like this before therefore, I was proud of it even though it is not a good design which could be used in film in tv.

For the next look I wanted to explore the freak show and the circus which is why i created a clown.

Freak show fashion 1952

Freak show fashion 1952 and ideas for Claudia

Elsa Mars is the ideal woman that everyone looks up to and respects in AMH. Her fashion sense is something that every girl wants and every man admires. She wears a lot of fur and feathers which shows her power.

Possible make up ideas for Claudia

- Classic Wing Liner
- Red Lip
-Thin round eyebrows
-Finger waves
-Pale foundation
-Blue eyeshadow

Characterisation and Inspiration

Characterisation and Inspiration  ( Claudia vs Elsa)

Reference - http://americanhorrorstory.wikia.com/wiki/Elsa_Mars

My inspiration of Claudia comes from Elsa Mars, from American Horror Story Freak Show. Claudia is a character in Freak Show that seeks to be like Elsa.

Elsa Mars a German woman with a dark past of prostitution. Even though her intentions for giving her "monsters" a home might have been self-serving, she was still the leader of the troupe and received the utmost respect. However, due to the rise of television and radio, the entertainment once provided by freak shows was being received elsewhere. Despite this, Elsa was obsessed with becoming an international star; if only she could persuade the sleepy hamlet of Jupiter to buy a ticket.
Elsa is a woman with a very fashionable taste. It's not rare to see the leader of the freaks adorned in feathers or fur, and it's likely that these flashy clothing choices are inspired by her Hollywood idols of the era. Elsa's outfits have undertones of a professional, sending the message that she's a powerful force to be reckoned with. Even in casual and sleepwear she is dressed in the most lavish fabric, generally silk. And when she's out on the town she's never caught dead without her large personalised purse engraved with her show's devilish logo. When it comes to her golden locks, she sticks to a classic, tight-curled hairdo fitting of the time period. She often wears light make-up, unless she is performing of course. Elsa's outfits on stage are that of completely different variety. They communicate her desire to be a true a performer.
In terms of personality, Elsa's is certainly one of a large capacity. The German ex-pat is probably best known for her ambition and cleverness. However, often times she works in her own self interest, meaning her cleverness can begin to tread into waters of manipulation. Yet, despite these flaws, Elsa's overall personality is one of class and kindness. She seems to truly care for her freaks and their well-being. As long as they stay out of her spotlight, that is.
This is where Claudia comes in. Living in 2015 Claudia is obsessed with old fashioned films. American Horror story Freak show represents 1952 which is the time that Claudia thinks she lives in, which influences her dress sense, make up and actions. She seems Elsa as a very fashionable woman who is respected therefore tries to seek to be her. Even though Claudia has created her own role of 'Claudia Alastor', even in the show she wants to be Elsa. Her role is girl who no one pays attention to and spends hours everyday changing herself to be like Elsa. What Claudia doesn't realise that Elsa is also doing the same, with her dark past and history there is nothing more that else wants than to layer on make up and feel like a different woman who people admire and respect.
Living in 1952 Claudia has a different fashion taste than her surroundings.

Claudia Quentin, They are in Love?

Claudia Quentin, They are in Love?

For this part of our project we are going to design characters for Claudia and Quentin developing our design skills as well as developing characters, referencing to Gothic Horror throughout for inspiration.
Claudia and Quentin will have to be linked in with the TV Series that we chose which in my case is American Horror Story.
We will explore the mood, title, genre, cast and tone of the programme.

Claudia
Claudia is a girl in her twenties. As a child she was left alone to develop with little parental guidance and through her relationship with T.V. movies developed an unhealthy relationship with Horror films, believing this to be the way life really is.
All the scenes take place in various parts of Claudia’s apartment, which is European in style with a great deal of kitsch décor. She is agoraphobic and is kept in touch with the outside world by her neighbours who provide her with her every day requirements.  She models herself on a variety of girls often twisting her look to suit whichever film she is watching at the time and there is often a nod to the main character in the current film within her appearance.
The script portrays her as psychotic and there is always the feeling that although her character is scripted/can be seen as humorous, danger is just around the corner.   However all this is normal to Claudia and she is of a cheerful disposition in this mad world of hers.

Developing Claudia, my interpretation.

Name : Claudia Bryon    :Fantasy name : Claudia Alastor

Interests

Books : American Gothic, The Monk a Romance, Carmilla
Films : Psycho, The shining

-  Claudia since a child has had no one to show her love. Although she has lived in a house with parents, she has never experienced love and nurturing but not because her parents didn't love her.  This made Claudia take comfort in watching films because she felt a connection with the actors, it made her get away into her own world. It was a way to escape her loneliness, everything that was bothering her a way to make friends which is why she kept it a secret. In front of her parents Claudia acted normal but when she was on her own she felt as if she was in a horror film.
Claudia was insecure because no one had ever paid attention to her so make up and costumes made her feel confident as it does for any girl but in a weird way. Claudia will wear a costume from her favourite film and pretend she is the girl from it, she will act and talk in a complete different way.

It was at the age of 13 that Claudia started to develop and obsession with films, but not just any films. Horror films. Of course at the age of 13 she was not allowed to watch them, however whenever her parents were at work Claudia would sneak in to their room put on a scary film and watch it over and over again until they came home. She found murder scenes fascinating, she felt goosebumps in her body when she saw the killer approaching and instead of being scared Claudia felt pleasured. It pleasured her to watch something that was not allowed, that made her skin crawl.....
At the age of 18 Claudia's obsession grew even more as she went from getting into her own world when watching a horror film to being in her own world all the time thinking as if it is a scary film, she would take clowns and leave them by her little sisters door to scare her, she would make scary noises to frighten her neighbours Claudia's life started to go even more downhill when she realised everyone around her had a boyfriend. This made her feel extremely lonely, when she would see couples holding hands, couples in films. She started to wonder what was really wrong with her and by her twenties she started to create her own horror movie staring her as the main actor and also an imaginary boyfriend named Quentin.

Quentin

Claudia has an imaginary boyfriend, Quentin, who is long suffering and a constant disappointment to her. They don’t live together but he visits regularly and they talk on the telephone if he can’t get in to see her. As he is part of her imagination his appearance changes to suit her mood. Sometimes he will be a David Beckham looking guy, whilst in another scene he will appear as a Pete Docherty type, Daniel Craig type or a Hollyoaks Babe. If she is having a bad day he will morph into an uncouth couch potato chav with all that brings with it.

He is as into the horror film genre as she and into role-playing to suit her whims and moods.
Claudia has a paranoid suspicion that he is constantly having affairs behind her back and keeps him firmly under her thumb, sometimes restraining him or keeping him prisoner in one of the rooms.

Developing Quentin

Growing up feeling lonely and abandoned Claudia soon became fixated on her own little world and that she could do anything she wanted with it. In her twenties she had a desire for a boyfriend and created Quentin. At first everything was going great, Quentin gave Claudia everything in which she never had. He complimented her, watched horror films with her etc. but after a while Claudia realised that Quentin did not fill the whole that she was missing, he didn't cure her of her loneliness he only made it worse. A way Claudia tried to deal with it was by making Quentin into different characters.

The perfect man who took care of Claudia, he fulfilled all her needs but not wants. Quentin made Claudia fall in love with her as he was the strong man in the relationship who took control. In the case of this Quentin Claudia became extremely jealous and protective over their relationship. She did not let him watch any films without her in case he developed a secret relationship with the characters, she did not let him go outside without her or talk to anyone she kept Quentin as a puppet. When he failed to make her happy even after doing everything as told this is when the psychosis began. This was because it was her imaginary world she could make up anything she wanted so why was she not happy with him. Their relationship was very strange it was very intimate but it would go from massive arguments with throwing things around to Claudia begging for Quentins forgiveness whilst crying.

FREAK SHOW

American Horror Story Freak show

Freakshow is set in Florida in 1952. It is not just about a circus, it is about the strange emergence of darkness that threatens lives and even kills. It is about a group of 'freaks' who work in a circus and have a dream to perform in front of millions. They are made fun of, threatened and bullied because of their looks but in reality all they want is what all the normal characters in the show want, to work hard and achieve their goals. They may look like freaks but they have feelings, they are like a family who desperately try to reach the fame.
Although there are sides in the tv show that make you relate to the characters and understand them, there is also a darkness behind each one of them which pulls you back from relating to them and see the show in a weird, scary way.

Characters

Bette and Dot Tattler who are a pair of sisters that share a body, but not a heart. I like them because of their two personalities Dot being the angel and Bette being the devil. They try to stop each other from doing the good or bad but at the end of the day they want the same thing, to find love.

Jimmy Darling who is the protector of them all, who has been bullied his whole life from being a 'freak' and will stand up for all the freaks in the circus.

Elsa mars a German woman, is desperate to stop the Freak Show from dying. Her aim is to get to fame and perform in from of millions. Elsa has been tortured her whole life and has many secrets which she hides behind the strong confident woman that just wants fame. However when uncovered she reveals that she has more in common with monsters than appeared.

Pepper is a playful woman with a dark family secret.

Twisty is one of my favourite characters because of how misunderstood he is. He has a very scary appearance and has been made fun forever which has led him to be defensive, in some cases extremely defensive resulting in kidnapping and murder. However out of all the characters Twisty is the only genuine one that loved kids and just wanted to be an entertainer with no dark secrets.

                                        Scenes

This scene clearly portrays Twisty as being a horrible killer clown, however by mid season the audience love and feel sorry for Twisty after getting to know his background.

John Galliano fall 2009

I chose John Galliano's look to create as  I can see links of it to American Horror Story freak show as well as the design ideas I have for Claudia and Quentin.

I love this look because of the choice of colours and different textures. Even though there are reds and blacks they are very settle which is why i like it. The wow factor of this look comes from the glossiness of the lips and also the high points of the face. I went in depth to this make up look and found very interesting points to the look which I will use for my Claudia and Quentin.
I love the fact that the tips of the eyelashes are white but the roots are still black with black kohl liner tightened to create a thicker lash line. Also the shimmery white/silver eyeshadow creates bigger looking eyes as it is dragged down far down the eye.
The lips are my favourite part as they have an ombre look to them, the gold on top as well as the gloss in the middle of the lips make it look very plump and juicy and the concealer around the mouth makes the look doll like which i also link to American Horror Story.

To create the look I started of with a primer. I used a foundation a tone lighter than my skin tone as the look on the runway was very pale. For the eyes I used a medium brown colour bringing it from the crease and attaching it to my nose. I added a gold in the inner corner and a gold pigment on the sides of my nose. For the lids i used an ice pigment as I did not have any white pigments. For the lips I used M.A.C. Russian red to create a heart like shape with a bit of gloss in the middle and concealed my lips from the sides. I also used a lighter eyebrow colour to lighten the eyebrows and make it more high fashioned.

Relations to American Horror Story.

Elsa Mars from American Horror Story comes across as a very strong confident woman. She portrays this by the way she dresses. Her hair and make up is always to the maximum showing her out there personality, however in real life Elsa has been through a lot which we get to see sometimes in the show.

American Horror Story

                                American Horror Story

American horror story is by far my favourite tv series I have ever watched. Season 2 was my favourite and was part of the reason why i chose to study make up and hair at solent university. Each season of AHS has a different timeline and a storyline with the same actors which is so interesting because we get used to the characters being normal people living in a haunted house to them changing into magic with powers just by the use of make up and prosthetics. American Horror Story made me realise how much of an importance make up has in TV and Film because not only does it have to make the audience engage it also has to make the actors believe to make them show their best ability of acting.

MAKE UP CHANGES in AMERICAN HORROR STORY

Season 1 was set in a haunted house where a family buys into it and experiences supernatural things which end in a lot of murder and weirdness. Although the plot isn't normal in season 1 the design of the make up, hair and costumes are very real which was a smart way to draw people in as starting of with different could fail to make people engage.

Season 2 Asylum - Season 2 was my favourite because of all the use of prostethics, the characters got weirder than season 1 and it was show through their appearance. One of my favourite characters is Pepper. To create Pepper each time the make up artists spent 3 hours transforming Naomi Gross.
There was also a lot of use of limbs and body parts.

Season 3 coven is about witches and magic. It was not my favourite season as I found it dull, they used the same costumes and same set almost in every episode with just black.

Miss Havisham continuity

Miss Havisham continuity

The continuity (on left) of the first look of Miss Havisham (on right) was extremely difficult main due to lack of notes that I had made, however because I had a lot of pictures in high quality it made it easier for me to copy from them, even though the continuity image is not the exact same as the actual image and would not be acceptable on film and tv i am still pleased as it was my first ever try of continuity.
I had a list of all the make up that I had previously used which made it easy for me to find the products without wasting any time or using anything that was not used before. Prepping and priming the skin both times with the same products made the application of the products sit nicely making the base of the look pretty much the same. I was pleased with the similarities between the eyebrows as i changed the shape of my partners eyebrows therefore found it difficult to recreate twice, however they look similar. I am also happy with the hair as I chose a difficult hairstyle which was very messy, meaning that when I had to recreate it any strands that were hanging out before had to be out again. Although the hair does not look the exact same it is still similar and I learnt a lesson that just because it is easy to create once it does not make it easy to recreate it the second time.

Evaluation

Overall I was happy with the turnout, however there are things that I could have done to improve. I wrote down which products I used however I did not write which product went on first and what part of the face was done first in steps which created a problem for the eyes. As I forgot to note that that I started of with the eyes let the colours dry and then powder and add on, I layered the products on top of each other which made the colour underneath the eyes change from the original colour I had created to a more of a yellow tone which looked even worse when i tried to fix it so I left it. From this I learnt that writing notes are crucial even if they seem really simple, they can be a lot of help. Another thing that looks completely different is the foundation. This is because my partner fake tanned before the continuity assessment which i did not realise until the end when i took a picture. As her skin was darker the second time the tone of the foundation had changed to a darker colour and as  I used a very sheer foundation it failed to cover the neck and the ears even though I did blend it down there. Next time before doing an assessment of continuity i will ask my partner not to fake tan or let me know if they do so therefore i can chose a different foundation to make sure they both match and on the day I will do another consultation sheet asking if they had fake tanned.

From this assessment of continuity I learnt that the simplest notes can make the biggest difference, and that just because something is very easy to create it does not mean that it is easy to recreate, therefore practise is needed even on easy designs. Also I used the images that i took on the professional camera which was a big mistake as it makes the make up look less and changes the tones which is why I should have used the images that I took on my iPhone with flash to get a clear idea of how much make up i used which really shows on the dry skin on the lips as it did not look much i did not add much which made it look even less in the continuity image.

Estella Assessment

Creating Estelle image

I was very pleased with the informal assessment for Estelle mainly because I managed time really well, completing the hair in 1 hour and the make up in 45 minutes. In the practise I spotted a few mistakes which I listed down and tried to fix for the assessment which I think improved the whole look.
The application of the make up for Estelle was much better than Miss Havishams and this was because I got to know my partners skin better which was dry therefore I chose a very rich moisturiser and a primer to suit her skin. This made the foundation sit on her skin very well with no dry parts. It also made the skin look very dewy and youthful rather than powdery and matte which would be better for older skin. I wanted strong highlighting to show the beauty which Pip fell in love with as highlighter is very beautiful and it brings out the cheekbones and also makes the skin look very dreamy and glowy. The ideal Victorian minimal make up was what I was aiming for therefore I kept it to the minimal. However having said that, I did apply lipstick and blusher which did not show on camera because I took a lighter hand with it. Knowing that the camera fades the make up I should have applied more of it as the pink blusher would have made her look even more youthful and it would make her look like she is blushing as she was when she admitted her love for Pip. I also think a coat of dark brown mascara would have made the look much better as it would make her eyes look more awake.
I am happy with how the hair turned out as I wanted it to be very similar to Miss Havishams, as Estella is very loyal to her and follows everything she does. I wanted to create the same sort of look with the layout but more crisper with no fly away hairs. To improve the hair i would use each strand of hair equal to each other for example an inch or half an inch of hair to curl and pin which I started doing but forgot. I believe that this would make the look more neat and perfect for film. Also on the right side of the he'd the hair is a little messy which could be fixed by adding a little more mouse or
gel.

The Real life Miss Havisham

The Real life Miss Havisham

Vervia todd who died in November 2012 at 92 years of age was the real life Miss Havisham. She was left widowed after her husband died at war. The real life Miss Havisham kept her whole life a secret including her love and interest of a massive collection of designer vintage clothing, hats and shoes which was worth more than £100,000. The collection of clothing which Vervia Todd was collecting had been from the First World War, which was hidden away in her home.
Her house was found to be so similar to Miss Havishams, Satis house as everything was left the exact same way to when she died, as if she had never left and was living in decay..

Just like Miss Havisham found a way to deal with her pain and betrayal by adopting Estella and teaching her all the reasons that she was hurt, Vervia Todd dealt with her husbands death by collecting vintage clothes but never actually touching them, stashing them away.

I was very inspired by this story which made me develop my ideas and design of Miss Havisham further. I decided that As Vervia Todd had her clothes that helped her deal with the death of her husband and Miss Havisham from the Great Expectations had Estella, my Miss Havisham had an obsession with her therefore i kept the make up so simple focusing mostly on the hair making it crips and sharp and very bridal.

Estella Practise

Estella Practise  & Notes

The practise for the make up look I created for the character Estella from the great expectations was less stressful than the actual assessment, which made it for fun for me, however I spotted mistakes that i created in the practise on a piece of paper which I used in the timed assessment to make sure I don't repeat those mistakes.

One thing I really liked was how the foundation sat on the skin, it looked very natural and dewy. I also liked the freckles, however they looked more natural on the left side and drawn on the right side.
For the make up I bronzed the skin up too much making it look like a sun tun rather than a youthful glow which is what I was going for so I made sure to use a lighter foundation and less bronzer for the actual assessment. The eyebrows were too thick and drawn in which was not a match for the perfect Victorian era which is something else i minimised for the actual assessment. I wanted to keep the eyelashes natural without any mascara however from powdering the skin the eyelashes had become dry and dull looking so I made sure to add a coat of mascara to the lashes.

For the hair i really liked the overall style however it looked very messy and frizzy so i added hair mouse and gel in the assessment to make it more neat and crisp which is how I would imagine Estella wearing her hair. Getting carried away with the hair style I stopped hiding the pins which made the look messy in the end when I tried to hide it.

Steps to maintain continuity for assessment

Steps to maintain continuity for assessment

For the assessment to create the Miss Havisham looks I made plans to keep the continuity consistent.
First of all I took pictures of the looks and printed it out zoomed in to make sure I could see detail on the day of the assessment. Visuals will help me to see anything that needs to be changed. I then created a step by step guide again with pictures for anything technical such as creating dry skin or scars. I brought with me a sheet of all of the products used in order, which helped me to prevent wasting time and following a step by step guide. I also used a face chart to get an idea of the overall look. Whilst doing the look I wrote down notes of how big the strands of hair I used were and how high up the parting was wether it was above the ear or below it.

The steps I took are helpful however to improve I would make the face charts more detailed as they weren't very useful. I would also bring a step by step not just for the hair but also for the make up. Another thing that i would do to maintain continuity is take pictures of the eyes separate to the lips and cheek etc., to properly zoom in and have a look instead of leaning over to see details on the eyes.

ASSESSMENT for MISS HAVISHAM

                                            HAIR

For the hair part of the look, I had pictures to help me visualise from the pervious practise. I also had a step by step written down. To make sure that in the continuity the hair worked out the same I made notes.
Overall i am pleased with how the hair turned out as it looks like a beautiful bridal hair, it also looks the same to my design. What I found difficult in creating this look was in every step I was doing I was thinking about continuity and how I would recreate it which made it very stressful. One thing that is going to make it very hard for me to re create this look are the baby hairs that are on the sides of her face and also the back of the head. Also a few pins are showing which means that when i recreate this look i have to make sure that the same amount of pins, in the same colour will be in the same place. To improve I would hide the pins better and also curl the hair with the exact same thickness as the rest as some of the curls are bigger and some are smaller which again will make it harder for me. However to help me i wrote down notes to help me such as how thick the parting is if it is above the ear or below, how many curls in each parting and also I will have photos to help me.

Make Up

The make up part of the assessment was easier because in mind i knew it would be a little easier to recreate as from previous practise I had taken out any complicated bits such as bits of dry skin that would be hard to recreate. I am pleased with the outcome, as she looks battered. Being around Miss Havisham was uncomfortable for others as she was crazy therefore I am happy with the way the red eyeliner turned out. It makes you look at it and feel umcofortable. I also like the fact that underneath the eyes looks natural, the bags and the darkness looks like she hasn't slept not that it is exaggerated and drawn on. Another thing that i like is the shade of the foundation that i used. I mixed a bit of white and grey with M.A.C.'s face and body and it gave her skin a dull and illl look. However there are some steps that I could take to make the look better like making the under eyes even darker to make  her look even more battered. I would also use whit on the eyebrows and the hair to age her and also the wrinkles are faint so making them darker would pick up on the camera more. Overall I am pleased with how the look turned out.

Miss Havisham Hair

Miss Havisham Hair

Miss Havisham had bridal flowers in her hair which means that she was dressed up for a wedding. Bridal flowers means a bridal hairstyle hence why I decided to go with a traditional beautiful Victorian hairstyle.
My main inspiration for the hair that I created for Miss Havisham was ringlet curles that was so popular in the 19th century.

I was inspired by this hairstyle created by Bunny who is a Youtube beauty guru. I really liked the sides of the hairstyle where it was curled and pinned back with lose hair hanging out from the sides which would look good for Miss Havishams character as she is only half dressed. Miss Havisham was also in a lot of chaos which would have caused her hair to fall out and become messy, however I had to be careful with how I made it look messy because Victorian hairstyles would have been done very professionally especially bridal hair making it very crisp and tight, which meant that I couldn't have it frizzed all over the place I needed to show a base of a beautiful Victorian bridal hair.

For the hairstyle i started of with a ponytail as a base and then started to curl the hair with very thing tongs and pin it up. I carried on like this for the rest of the hair and added flowers on the sides in the end. I am happy with how the hairstyle turned out as it looks very innocent and bridal which shows how Miss Havisham was before she was wronged. Although some of the curls ended up to be messy, in my opinion it still worked with the whole concept since Miss Havisham was described to look 'battered'.

To improve I would make sure that the middle parting is very crisp and obvious as it was a feature used in the Victorian era. Also I would work on hiding the pins better underneath the hair as it looks very unprofessional, I would do this by pinning the hair underneath different strands of hair. Lastly to complete Miss Havisham I would stain the flowers and make them look dusty to fit it with her surroundings because It would be weird if she was surrounded by dust and decay but the flowers on her head were white and clean.

Having completed a client consultation sheet for Harriet previously I already knew that her hair was very thick which is why i used the curlers on a higher heat.

List of products used :

- Cape

-Thin curlers

- Bobbi pins

- Sectioning clips

-Hair brush

-Hair mouse & Hair spray

-Bridal Flower clips

- Thin comb

Overall I was happy with the outcome because the hairstyle looked bridal which is how i wanted to portray, I was pleased with how the curls sat as i wanted them to be messy as when the time stopped Miss Havisham was in chaos which would result in her hair becoming lose and undone. Even though the pins are showing through the hair which is very unprofessional in the end I liked the outcome because it added on to the messiness of the hair.

Step by step in creating this hair style :

- Brush hair
-Create a middle parting and section it into 3 strands on each side and clip them aside
-Create a v shape parting down the middle of the hair and add a ponytail
- Split the ponytail into 4 parts and curl and pin it to the hair
-Curl the rest of the hair and pin it around the  ponytail
-Loosen up bits to make it look messy
-Add flowers
